Kennedy in 1963, there was immediate consideration for his portrait to be placed on one of the larger silver coins as a memorial. Jacqueline Kennedy’s preference was to depict her late husband on the half dollar, replacing the previous design of Benjamin Franklin, because she did not want to replace George Washington on the quarter.

Congress quickly approved legislation to authorize it just over a month after his death. For the Obverse of the new coin, Gilroy Roberts modeled it after a representation of Kennedy that he had created for his 1961 bronze Inaugural Medal for the Mint’s Presidential series. For the Reverse of the new coin, Frank Gasparro produced an eagle motif that was closely modeled after his reverse design for the same Kennedy Inaugural medal. The design was approved by Jacqueline and Robert F. Kennedy, the wife and brother of the late president, respectively, and dies were quickly prepared and production for circulation began in 1964 at the Denver and Philadelphia Mints. The coins, composed of 90% silver, making them a one-year Type, were released to the public in March 1964. Upon release, many silver halves were hoarded by collectors and the general public with the increase in the price of silver. The unexpected demand and popularity of this design raised the total number minted from the original 91 Million to over 156 Million at the Denver Mint and over 273 Million at the Philadelphia Mint. Because of the wide interest, banks were forced to set limits on how many pieces individual customers could purchase. After the fall of the silver and gold standard, 90% silver coinage ceased, however, from 1965 to 1970 Kennedy Half Dollars were produced struck in 40% Silver-Clad, under the stipulations in the Coinage Act of 1965. Since 1971, regular issue circulation strikes have been produced in a copper-nickel composition; however, special silver proof sets have been struck since 1992.

Shipped with USPS First Class

NO International Sales or Shipping

1964 D / P KENNEDY HALF DOLLARS, 90% SILVER, US Mint, ‘About Uncirculated’ Condition Stored in Closed Plastic Cylinders (see photo), each containing twenty 1964 Kennedy Half Dollars, for the past 50 years after Original Purchase from Bank. The 1964 Kennedy Half Dollars were minted at the Denver and Philadelphia Mints. This collection has […]

[93
